Throwing a party or open house to celebrate graduating from high school is common practice among graduating seniors. However, English teacher Andrew Parker said there’s a difference between a good graduation party and a bad one.
“Personally, I’d like to see more bounce houses and pony rides,” he said. “Sometimes they’re just not exciting enough for me.”
However, Parker also said that the number of people at the party is important.
“The sheer number of people at several parties I’ve been to is good,” he said. “If there’s lots of people, there’s always someone to run into and have a conversation with. You run into all types of people.”
Sophomore Harrison Kane agrees.
“I enjoy seeing people that I haven’t talked to in a while,” he said. “I think that’s why graduation parties are fun.”
However, there’s another aspect that’s even more important, according to Kane.
“I’ve made it my mission to attend as many grad parties as I can this year,” he said. “What I’ve realized is that you have to have the right kind of food. Some people get their parties catered, and others don’t. The important thing is to have a teenager-friendly food selection. Nothing too fancy, nothing that is an acquired taste, but also nothing too cheap and bad quality.”
Whether it’s the food or the people that make it great, Parker said that the host also has to be confident.
“Once you’ve reached graduation, the first step to adulthood, throwing a party like this shouldn’t be too stressful on you,” he said. “Just relax and be comfortable. Have a good time.”
