The 29th Annual Cooper Fun Run/Walk kicked off on Friday, May 11th at Hudson Mills Metro Park. The event is named the Cooper Fun Run because Nancy Cooper, a retired special education teacher in Chelsea, started the event with just a few of her classes 29 years ago. It has grown to be an event with over 1000 participants from all across Washtenaw county. National Honor Society (NHS) and its faculty advisor, Cheryl Wells, have been involved with the Fun Run for over twenty years. It’s a special day for the Dexter students who participated in the event and the 60 NHS students worked hard to make it even more special and safe for them. “They are positioned along the course to help the special Olympians stay within the track. We also have walkie talkies to work with the Red Cross in case of emergency. We hand out over 2000 cups of water to the runners and cook hot dogs for all the volunteers. We also refurbish, clean and label 240 trophies and hand out over 1000 blue ribbons to the participants,” Wells said via email. But Wells wasn’t the only high school faculty member who enjoyed this event. Special education teacher Megan LeBarre, who has been at Dexter for five years, has been taking her students to the Fun Run since 2007. LeBarre said,“Typically I take about ten students.” Yet there are many more students from Dexter who go. Students and staff from Mill Creek, Creekside and the Dexter Young Adults program also went. As a result of all these people going LeBarre said, “We are one big Dexter group. Which is awesome.” For her, the best part of the event is the sense of community and camaraderie within the whole county. She said, “It’s a really special day, to see everybody, and reconnect with those who have graduated or who are in the Young Adult program. And to see those who are coming up to us (the high school). It’s a fun day.” LeBarre would also like to thank, “All the volunteers NHS, Key Club and Boysville and the students who come out and help us. We couldn’t do it without you guys. We appreciate it.”
